Bachelor of Science in Biological and Applied Medical Sciences (BAMS)

BAMS Haiti

22 September 2011 – 27 April 2012, National Laboratory of Public Health (LNSP), Delmas (Haiti)

BAMS Mali

24 September 2012 - 28 June 2013, Charles Mérieux Centre, Bamako (Mali)

An in-depth study of the current situation in Mali has revealed weeknesses related to laboratory staff : competencies of health care professionals involved in the diagnosis and follow-up of infectious diseases are often insufficient.

There is therefore a need to offer complementary training to laboratory professionals so as to improve the quality of biomedical laboratories.

Expanding clinical biology capacity in sub-saharan Africa

Fondation Mérieux, together with the Université Catholique de Lyon and in partnership with the ESTBB, has therefore decided to start up a professional training program for laboratory technicians, BAMS, in Bamako, Mali. The purpose of this course is to expand clinical biology capacity in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Fondation Mérieux provides the project's central coordination. In partnership with the Faculté Catholique de Lyon, the ESTBB is responsible for the educational part of the training. Fondation Mérieux Mali, and specifically the Centre Charles Mérieux, is responsible for the local coordination of the BAMS project, with training taking place exclusively in Bamako.

Training qualified laboratory technicians

Spread over a year, the purpose of BAMS is to promote fifteen people. Selected by competition, the pupils already work in the field of medical biology or biotechnology and are holders of a university degree.

BAMS comprises two semesters of teaching, during which it alternates between theoretical and practical teaching in the fields of immunology, biochemistry, bacteriology, parasitology, virology and molecular biology. This training offers the equivalent of 60 ECTS.

BAMS objectives are :

  • Improve the abilities of laboratory personnel and standardize practices so that they comply with international standards;

  • Improve diagnosis so better care can be provided and provide improved management of laboratories;

  • Increase and diversify trainer capacity by using innovative techniques;

  • Improve public health for populations while reducing costs.
