The Kingdom of Cambodia has an area of about 181,000 km2 and is bordered by Thailand, Laos and Vietnam. It has a population of nearly 14 million people, over half of whom are under the age of 20.
Health situation
The country is in great expansion but the standard of living remains low.
Its per-capita gross national income (GNI) is 235 Euro and 36% of Cambodians live below the poverty line.
As indicated by the official epidemiological data, the health situation within the country is also alarming. Out of the 170,000 and 290,000 Cambodians living with the AIDS virus, only 10,000 use a triple antiretroviral therapy. 98,000 Cambodians are infected with tuberculosis and 66,600 with malaria. Only 47% of the population has access to healthcare.
A considerable imbalance exists between the amount of health offered in Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia and the rest of the country. The major stake is to rebalance the offer of health access between the capital and the rural areas.
