Haiti is the poorest country in the entire Western Hemisphere. The island is regularly ravaged by natural disasters such as hurricanes and cyclones. The unemployment rate is 65% and half the population of 8.7 million live on less than 2 Euro per day. Although Haiti is a republic, the political situation remains extremely unstable.

Health situation

The life expectancy of Haitians has decreased to below 60. 24,000 Haitians die of HIV / AIDS every year and more than 280,000 live with the disease. All Haitian infants born with HIV die before their first birthday. 26,000 new cases of tuberculosis are reported each year and nearly 10,000 Haitians suffer from malaria.
